You know that feeling when you put on an absolutely AMAZING piece of jewelry? There’s something about the way it can transform your outfit that gives you an extra little pep in your step. You hold your head higher, and your aura of confidence is all but visible to the naked eye. We all could use a little more of this look-good-feel-good vibe in our days!
So let me let you in on a little secret: that feeling is 100x better when what you’re wearing supports a larger mission.
I don’t know about you, but it’s nearly impossible for me to feel like a mighty, empowered goddess when my clothes are made in a way that degrades and exploits my fellow women.
My problem was that, in the past, a lot of fair trade accessories have reflected the styles of the countries they come from. Now there's nothing wrong with that, but I was never quite confident enough to pull off the larger, heavier pieces. Although I think African jewelry is GORGEOUS, it just isn't quite for me.
But nowadays THERE IS A WAY to have jewelry that is both ethical and beautiful! I'm about to show you a brand that takes traditional styles and re-designs them in a way that better fits contemporary American life. You can find beads or pendants, small pieces or large pieces-- whatever is right for your individual style. So, yes ladies, we CAN have it all- ethical AND stylish! Meet my new crush: Noonday Collection.
My boyfriend's mom bought me this necklace for Christmas, and I could not be more thankful for her conscious, thoughtful gift. Not only is it gorgeous, but when I put on these paper beads from Noonday Collection, I’m reminded of the love and care put into the creation of them! I can see the artisans’ beautiful hands, and I have peace of mind knowing that they were not only treated fairly, but in a way that empowers them, their families, and their communities. From design to inception to just the piece my outfit needed today, my Noonday beads carry all the love, strength, and good juju we as women should expect from our accessories. Empowered women empower women, after all.

Noonday Collection is a socially responsible business that uses fashion to create meaningful opportunities around the world. They design and sell jewelry and accessories made, according to fair trade principles, by 29 artisan businesses in 12 different countries, empowering these artisans and their families through dignified work and sustainable income. In Peru, alpaca pieces are hand-knit in small co-operatives. Tagua pieces are made in Ecuador, horn jewelry in Vietnam, paper beads in Uganda.
Yeah, there are other companies out there that do similar things. Many high fashion designers now work with artisans to ensure unique, quality, and responsible products. So what makes this company any different?
Noonday stands out to me because they not only take care of the people that create their products, but also of the very materials that go into them!
In Ethiopia, bullet casings leftover from war conflicts are added to a mixture of other metals, melted down, and re-made into beads. In Guatemala, artisan women gather to create the intricate bead designs to be placed on the upcycled PVC pipe cuffs made by the men.
My absolute favorite part about their work is that you can go online and see exactly who is impacted by your purchase! You can see the names, stories, and photos of every single one of their artisan partners. It makes purchasing and wearing jewelry a truly intimate and significant experience.
